emeco 111 navy red chair with coca cola bottles

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), used in billions of plastic bottles every year, is probably the most common plastic on earth. Our goal is to keep it out of landfills and oceans by turning it into timeless, well-built chairs that people want to keep for a long time - the opposite of disposable.

In 2006, Coca-Cola approached Emeco to solve an environmental problem — “upcycling” waste plastic bottles into an iconic structural item, made to last. Emeco committed to the challenge, taking soft recycled PET plastic, originally intended for short-lived fabric and textiles, to build a tough, one-piece, scratch-resistant chair. The development process required both determination and patience. Finally, in 2010, the 111 Navy Chair was launched. “Although pioneering a brand new material and reengineering a core product was a significant investment for us, I was excited about the impact of using the rPET from millions of bottles each year. We’ve turned something many people throw away into something you want and keep for long, long time.” -Gregg Buchbinder, Emeco Owner
